TABLE | What is alkalinity?

Before starting my juice journey I had no idea what alkaline meant. (I clearly wasn’t an A
student when it came to high school chemistry.) Alkaline, plain and simple, means a PH
greater than 7. Still stumped? Same.
To understand alkalinity and why we should strive to keep our bodies in a slightly alkaline state, we have to understand the chemistry behind PH. PH is a numeric scale that specifies the acidity (0-7) or basicity/alkalinity (7-14) of a solution (like our blood). In order for us to maintain good physical and mental health our bodies need to be in a slightly alkaline state. When our bodies are overly acidic, it leaves the door open for disease, mental illness, and inflammation. And, let's face it, none of us want to be inflamed.
So how do we combat acidity and reach a more alkaline state? We push out the bad stuff and invite in the good. What makes up the good and bad, you ask? Well, here we go!
The VERY Good: Foods that are most alkaline.
• Lemon and lime
• Raw almonds
• Himalayan pink salt
• Sprouts
• Dark leafy greens like spinach and kale
• Cucumbers
• Alkaline water (our personal favorite)
• Spices such as ginger, tumeric, cayenne, and parsley
• Bee pollen (local is best)
• Figs
• Avocado
• Beets
We highly recommend any of our green juices to not only flood your
body with nutrients, but to also help your body reach an alkaline state.
The Good: Moderately alkaline foods.
• Sprouted grains
• Olive oil
• Asparagus
• Cashews
• Coconut
• Cauliflower
• Squash
• Sweet potato
• Squash (Summer and Fall)
• Cooked Veggies
The Middle of the Road: Foods that are around 7 on the PH scale
• Regular spring water
• Raw goat cheese
• Raw cows milk and butter
Now moving on to the not so alkaline.
Foods that are somewhat acidic
• Cooked food
• Canned or frozen food
• Pinto beans
• Coffee (I didn’t say this was going to be easy)
Foods and Substances that are VERY acidic:
• Meat (don’t have a cow now...)
• Soda and carbonated drinks
• Sugar
• Alcohol
• Refined Sugar
• Cigarettes
• Drugs
• Transfats
• Queso (Wait...what?!)
When it comes to leading a life where we are in an alkaline state, we are living a life in
which we fill our bodies with nutrients we need to keep diseases, inflammation and mental illness at bay. We are not only setting our bodies up for success but we are ensuring an overall physical, emotional, and proactive well being. That's what we're all about here at Greenheart.
